What's NCHA?

The North Carolina Horseshoers Association (NCHA) is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in the art and science of farriery. The organization's goal is to define, maintain, and improve the quality of craftsmanship and standard of ethics within the association and industry.

The NCHA community is comprised of and open to all farriers and veterinarians, horse owners, trainers, veterinarians and vendors in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia.

NCHA Presents:  First Annual Danny Ward Memorial Contest and Clinic at Virginia Tech.

Contest November 9, 2018 8:00AM

All shoes are to be punched for an appropriate Liberty Nails

Class 1:  8:30-10:30

Team of 4 Farriers will shoe a saddle horse with appropriate concave section.

Fronts: to be Toe clipped, Hunter Fit

Hinds: to be Quarter clipped, Pleasure Fit


Class 2:  12:00-2:00

Team of 4 Farriers will shoe a Saddle Horse with appropriate 3/4 Fullered section.

Fronts: to be Toe Clipped, Pleasure Fit

Hinds: to be Quarter Clipped, Pleasure Fit


Class 3:  3:00-5:30

The Top 5 teams (combined team score from classes 1 & 2) will  shoe a Draft Horse with appropriate 3/4 fullered section

Fronts: to be Toe Clipped, Agricultural Heels

Hinds:  to be Toe Clipped, Agricultural Heels


Entry Fee $800 per team. Guaranteed 2 Rounds; Top 5 Teams will progress to 3rd Round.


Novice Division (less than 3 Years Farrier Experience). Novice Entry Fee $150

Using the supplied shoes, complete all modifications required for the AFA Certified Farrier Shoe Board. Patterns will be provided.  The Novice class will be provided Kerckhaert Dura shoes.

Provide your own pad/pads and traction devices.

5/16” X 3/4” will be provided for bar shoe.

Abusive language or cruelty to animals will not be tolerated. No alcoholic beverages allowed on contest grounds. Offenders will be disqualified.

Each team is allowed 1forge, 1 anvil and 1 vise. No cross ties will be provided. Horse must be held by a team member at all times.  Each team member must complete one foot (trim, forge shoe, nail and finish) striking is permitted. All four feet must be completed to be judged.


Prizes:  Winning team members will receive a trophy buckle. Top 3 teams will receive a monitory award.


Blacksmith class: Bring a handmade item to donate to our auction. Winner will receive $100.
